Keynote: Zonta Club of Melbourne on Yarra
Erin spoke at the Zonta Club of Melbourne on Yarra.
The interest of G20 leaders is primarily economic. However, as the current global economic and social climate changes, there is pressure on the institution to have an increasingly dynamic use of its power. As one of five official engagement groups of the G20, the Y20 2015 ambitiously demanded that Leaders include civil and political stability in its agenda. The sentiment of the Y20 is that stability and inclusiveness are critical for economic prosperity, and this includes domestic stability. Women across G20 countries and beyond are facing a domestic violence pandemic, with 35 per cent of women worldwide experiencing violence in their lifetime. This begs the question, what role can the G20 play in raising awareness and reducing rates of domestic violence? And what can other institutions similarly do, that are not already working towards women's domestic liberation?
